The Age of Climate Change
A Rite of Passage
Humanity as a Geological Force of Nature for Planetary Energy Equilibrium
Why write this book?
Climate change may be an existential challenge to humanity. It may be one of our creating. It will not be the last. In our journey to discover the limits of our abilities, climate change is just one station of many stretching to the horizon.
I live during a time of great global change. It is the best of times. As a kid, I saw the old way. Much of the technology that we take for granted today did not exist. In practical terms, no electronic or digital technology existed then. The scope of change in the world in my lifetime is greater than the scope of change in the previous five thousand years combined.
How do you process it all? How do you keep track of it all? It is easy. Good technology feels natural. And that is the way it should be. While technology makes life easier, there is a hidden cost. It separates us from nature.
The separation of humanity from nature is the global tragedy of my lifetime.
This book is a counterpoint to the separation of humanity from nature.
In our built-out world issues like climate change, that transcend national borders and affect all of humanity, will occur routinely. The Rite of Passage that humanity faces is to get where we can handle them well. Today, it is climate change. Tomorrow there will be other issues. Our destiny awaits…
